ORBEA Avant M20Team-D 2019

You knew when you planned the ride it would be a long day - a route stacked with grinding climbs and twisting descents, terrible roads with a good amount of who-knows-what-else thrown in. These rides are memorable, monumental, challenging. Grab your Avant and do a quick check before rolling into the morning mist. No other machine could better help you endure the hours of rough, exhausting conditions ahead. It's going to be a long day - and you'll love it.
Avant uses technologically advanced carbon construction techniques so that you can climb faster and ride longer. Orbea Monocoque Performance (OMP) adds high modulus and high strength fibers to a standard layup to improve stiffness-to-weight ratios. Bladder molding with polyurethane headtube and bottom bracket inserts eliminates wrinkles in critical zones, allowing less carbon to be used while maintaining strength.
Dynamic Structure Comfort:
Carbon structure, tubing shapes and frame design are elemental to building a comfortable frame that helps reduce muscle fatigue. Avant's Dynamic Structure provides a smooth, light ride without bulky compromises like tubing inserts and elastomers. The natural flex patterns created by the carbon layup and minimal bulk of the top tube and seat stays deliver a dynamic, smooth ride that feels like floating over rough roads. The sensation is subtle - but you'd thank us for it.
The headtube, downtube and chainstays are shaped to resist twisting and transmit power to the rear wheel. There is no doubt about it, large cross-sections and resistance to flex in the bottom of the frame translate directly to more watts on the road and a sensation that power transfer is instantaneous.
The Avant fork uses a shallower, rounded blade profile and longer fork legs to increase frontal compliance by 10%. This intentional front-to-rear flex improves shock absorption and allows the wheel to track rough roads more closely without compromising the torsional stiffness that affects handling. You will appreciate this comfort when you are riding on bad roads and gravel, conditions which might force your riding partners to slow down. The increased axle-to-crown height is offset by shorter headtubes to maintain stack measurements and improve aesthetics.
Orbea Endurance Geometry:
Avant Endurance Geometry is born from years of analysing how ergonomics can help you ride further - unlike a racing geometry that is focused on aerodynamics. Endurance ergonomics result in a bike that is easier to ride and increases stamina. Handling is precise and intuitive. Angles and dimensions are considered carefully across a range of sizes to maximize rider comfort. And more comfort means longer rides.
Front and rear thru axles provide unparalleled rigidity and security to improve handling characteristics and also provides an incredibly stable calliper/rotor interface for better braking.
The move to wider tyres is happening everywhere, with even road racers opting for the comfort and lower rolling resistance of 25c and 27c tyres. The versatile Avant accepts 28c, 30c and even 32c dry weather tyres on contemporary wide rims, while still providing plenty of clearance.
Orbea Avant M20TEAM-D Road bike review, BikeRadar, September 2017 (2017 model, see here for full details):
"The original Avant Disc impressed us; back in 2014 it took our disc brake Bike of the Year award. Impressing both with Orbea's early commitment to discs and the thoroughly good job it did with implementing discs into its endurance platform.
In a few short years things have moved along a fair bit, we've seen the disc mount standard change to the more compact and lighter flat-mount, the availability of full hydraulics at much lower prices, and of course the implementation of thru-axles front and (in most cases) rear.
The revamped Avant takes many of its styling cues from the race bred Orca, adopting a much more angular profiling to its main tubes and the deep broad head tube looks like it came straight form a 'race special' even if it's a bit taller.
Orbea like Focus has been clever in its front geometry adjustments for endurance purposes, choosing to keep the head tube a more regular length and instead adding 10mm to the fork, which gives the added bonus of bigger tyre clearance.
With the stack and reach figures hitting 614mm and 390mm respectively, the Avant has a comfortably semi-upright ride position that makes it a nice place to be without compromising the bike's agility too much.
Under the skin Orbea has also taken its time to improve the Avant as a marathon machine. Inside the bottom bracket shell and in the head tube it's introduced polyurethane inserts that alleviate stresses on the carbon and reduce vibrations. Orbea also claims this make for a marginally stronger and lighter structure.
Orbea Avant M20D ride impression
Out on the road, the Avant feels wonderfully at ease, this is a bike built for big, challenging distances.
The smoothness of the ride is ideally balanced with a light and responsive forward motion, while direction changes are quick enough and the steering requires little effort to hold your chosen line through twists and turns.
It's not race-bike sharp like Cannondale's Evo or Canyon's Ultimate, and it's no F1 race machine, think of it more like a luxury (Ford) GT- as fast as you'll need and beautifully balanced.
On the climbs the de riguer climbing combo of 50/34 and 11-28 makes it a great companion for challenging ascents, and I particularly like both the speccing of Ice Tech rotors and the 160mm front/140mm rear pairing, which gives balanced, smooth and progressive stopping power whatever the weather and with little drama or noise.
Orbea offers a range of upgrades when you're selecting your bike from Orbea.com, along with an customising option called MYO which allows you to choose the paint scheme and even have your name painted on the frame for an extra charge.
Overall, the Avant a seriously compelling offer, and its closest rival in the Road Bike of Year category is the equally smooth and endurance focused Fuji Gran Fondo. If racing isn't your thing and you're looking for a light, comfortable endurance machine then this Basque-built beauty is well worth your consideration."
Highs: Smooth ride, smooth handling, very well equipped
Lows: Not one for the racing snakes
Buy if: You're looking for a comfortable bike for long distances
